We observe the principles of the Global Compact on the environment and adopt a preventative and proactive approach to environmental issues, by following the guidelines set in our 2008 policy as part of our social responsibility with regard to society and the local communities in which it operates.

We seek to progressively reduce the impacts of our activities on the natural environment through the following: rational use of resources and the elimination of waste; the use of energy produced from renewable sources and/or low or zero level emissions; the reduction of the quantities of waste produced and verification that it is properly treated; the use of products and services with a low environmental impact.

We also consider the results we can achieve by raising the environmental awareness of our personnel and all those with whom we do business, especially through our dedicated  financial products and services and through consideration of the environmental risks involved in financing transactions and project finance transactions in particular.

Energy and emissions

The optimisation of energy supplies and consumption is a priority and it is overseen by the Group Energy Manager who, in addition to managing energy supply contracts (electricity, methane, gas oil, etc.), makes recommendations to the different organisational units responsible on the rational and efficient use of energy sources.

Raw materials

The main raw materials used are paper and toner for printouts for internal use and also those for customers. The undertaking made by the Group to reduce consumption has continued, with benefits for the Bank (reduced costs), the customer (streamlined operations) and the environment (reduced paper consumption and travel).

Sustainable mobility

The Group has a number of large business centres on which problems of sustainable mobility and initiatives to solve them are concentrated. We reduce emissions of CO2 with:

  • a policy for travel, which favors and encourages the use of collective means of transport for corporate travels;

  • a coach shuttle service runs between Bergamo, Varese, Brescia and Milan (and actually within the city for the latter);

  • an increase in video conference meetings to limit, as much as possible, the physical transfers;

  • the continuation of the smart working project, launched in 2015; it allows employees to work from their own homes or at Group locations closer to where they live, contributing not only to reconcile personal and work dimensions of life, but also to reduce travel to-and-from work.

Climate change

The issue of the fight against and adaptation to climate change involves investments by private individuals and businesses, both to comply with changes in regulations and the efficiency standards for production processes and products and also to develop and use renewable energy sources. The Group has developed specific financing, financial lease and project finance products for these purposes.

In consideration of the activities performed by the Group it has no significant direct exposure to risks connected with climate change. Minor impacts may occur in relation to supply processes, especially with regard to fuel and electricity costs and commercial and lending processes relating to the occurrence of extreme climatic events which may affect the operating capacities and solvency prospects of corporate clients (a risk which is, however, mitigated by the high sector diversification of the Group’s lending).

UBI Banca participates in the collection of information on climate change of Carbon Discosure Project (CDP).
